What to clean before you move out

Pro tip: If something is staying after you go—and that includes appliances, doors, light fixure etc.—your property management team is likely going to take a look at it when you move out.

(Spoiler alert: It’s us. We’re your team.)

What we’re looking for during that final walk-through is a “move-in ready” level of clean.

While you won’t be charged for ordinary wear and tear, Crown Property Management does not consider dirt—in any form—within our scope of the definition of “ordinary wear and tear.”

Armed with your trusty, detailed final move-out responsibilities and cleaning instructions checklist, you’ll know exactly what we’re planning to take a look at when you move out—and how you can get it nice and clean before you do.

Deep clean from top to bottom

No surprises here; we’ll be taking a look at everything listed in your provided cleaning instructions checklist, including:

  • Baseboards and trim
  • Bath tub / shower
  • Blinds
  • Ceilings
  • Ceiling fans
  • Cupboards/drawers
  • Disposal (if applicable)
  • Dishwasher (if applicable)
  • Doors
  • Floors (linoleum, laminate, carpet, wood, etc.)
  • Light fixtures
  • Medicine cabinet
  • Refrigerator
  • Sinks
  • Stove/oven
  • Toilet
  • Vanity
  • Walls

What we’re looking for is a move-in ready clean; no additional scrubbing, sweeping, or scouring required.

Double-check the laundry room, garage, and/or storage

These tend to be the “out of sight, out of mind” spaces our tenants forget about the most—both in terms of cleaning up and packing up personal belongings.

In any of these spaces that apply in your property, make sure floors are swept and mopped, and all personal belongings (including oil, paint, soap, tires, boxes, etc.) are removed.

Don’t forget the fridge and freezer

Both should be empty and wiped down, inside and out, prior to final inspections.

Please do not turn off or unplug the fridge!

Outside spaces count, too

In addition to packing up personal belongings / outdoor furniture from the backyard, patio, and/or balcony, don’t forget the back yard!

If you have a yard you’re in charge of, please:

  • Clean up any pet waste
  • Mow the grass
  • Trim and clear the landscaping of any weeds

Temperature check

Before you go, replace the filter in your furnace (if applicable), and ensure the thermostat is set at an appropriate temperature for the current season.
