No matter where you stand on fall’s most debatable topics, we can all agree on one thing:
The change of season is a great reminder to change your furnace filter.

How often should I change my furnace filter?

Your furnace filter catches dust, pet hair, pollen, and other particles before they circulate through the air in your home. The dirtier it is, the harder it has to work, and the lower your indoor air quality is.

For the best results, set a reminder on your phone to check your furnace filter monthly, looking for an obvious build-up of dust, dirt, etc. 

You should plan to change your filter once every three months—about once per season—but potentially more often if you have pets, allergies, or central air conditioning.

How do I know what size of furnace filter to use? 

You’ll find your filter’s size printed on the edge of the furnace filter. Write this down or take a picture before you replace it, so you’ll always have the sizing handy. 

Additionally, when you replace your furnace filter, make sure the arrow in the filter is pointing toward the furnace, so it’s filtering air correctly. 

Speaking of firing up the furnace… 

… don’t forget to think about fire safety this season!

Be sure to test your smoke alarm(s) and replace the batteries, if needed. You should have a smoke detector near or in all sleeping areas and on every story, including your basement; please call our office if any of your alarms are damaged, missing, or need to be replaced.

If you have pets or small children, consider flameless candles; you’ll enjoy all the cozy glow with none of the fire risk. Many battery-operated candles even include remotes with a timer option, so you can set your flameless candles to turn on and off at certain times each night. 

If you’re using traditional candles, keep burning candles away from bedding, decorations, clothing, furniture, and discard any candles that are close to the bottom of the container.
